Does the Library provide test proctoring services?

As part of its mission to support lifelong learning, Messenger Public Library provides proctoring services for students enrolled in distance education courses and for testing required for career advancement. A MPL library cardholder may request a proctoring appointment, this is a free service provided to resident cardholders. Any other individual residing outside of MPL service boundaries may request the service for $25.00. Payable by cash or check only.Test proctoring sessions must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance, and is subject to the availability of staff and appropriate space. Proctoring is only available during library hours. For more information on this service, please speak to an Adult Services Librarian. 

How do I get a library card?

A resident of the Village of North Aurora can apply for a library card at the Messenger Public Library Circulation Desk. Adults must present a photo ID and current proof of residency (current utility bill, mortgage/lease documents) in the Village of North Aurora to obtain a library card. A parent or guardian (responsible party) must present proof of residency and sign the library card of an applicant under age 18. Click here for more library card registration information. If you are unable to come in to the Library, residents of North Aurora can apply for a temporary Digital Library card. The Digital Cards give temporary access to all of our streaming and downloadable video, music, ebooks, eaudiobooks, and electronic resources. Digital Library cards will must be converted to full-service cards if you want to place holds, and check out DVDs, music CDs, Hotspots, and print materials. Does the library have Study Rooms?

Study rooms are now available on a first come, first served basis for one 2-hour session per day. The library has four study rooms available. When the study rooms are open, at least one user per room must sign in at the User Services Desk and provide either a valid Messenger Library Card or a valid Photo ID. This is held at the User Services Desk while the room is in use. Study rooms are for individuals and groups of up to four people. Users under 12 must have an adult with to use a study room. You are guaranteed two hours in a study room. The study rooms close 15 minutes prior to the library's closing time. Meeting rooms are used to support library functions, meetings and programs. The spaces available for public use meetings are defined as the Meeting Room, the Conference Room, Room 1, Room 6, and The Barbara Messenger Tinger Youth Program Room. 

Can I print at the library?

Yes! You can print and make copies at the library for $0.10 a page for black and white and $0.25 a page for color. Library staff can offer limited, socially distancing assistance if you need help using the printer/copier.  You can also print wirelessly from your laptop or mobile device using the instructions found here, accessing our printing app, or by clicking the printer icon at the bottom of each page on our website. The copier and printer accepts cash and credit cards. 

Does the library have a notary public available?

A notary public appointed by the State of Illinois is available to notarize documents, free of charge, BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. To confirm that a notary public will be available when you visit the library, please call 630-801-4312 to inquire. Please Note: NO notary service will be available between 12 pm and 1 pm. Click here for a list of documents which cannot be notarized.

If I don’t live in North Aurora, can I still check out materials?

Yes, although not all materials are available for loan to Reciprocal Borrowers. Please call the library to verify that the item you wish to borrow is available. You will need to bring your valid library card issued by your home library and a photo ID in order to be registered to check out materials.

Am I able to send faxes at the library?

The library has a self-service fax machine which takes both cash and credit cards.

  • The cost per page is $1.00. You can choose to receive an email confirmation. If you chose to scan an item to email instead of faxing, there is no charge.
  • If you choose to scan an item to email or a flash drive instead of faxing, there is no charge.

Due to privacy issues Library staff are unable to fax materials for patrons.

How do I check my library account online?

Go to our Online Catalog and click Login at the top. Type in your library barcode and your PIN (the last 4 numbers of your phone number) in the popup box. Then select My Account located to the right of Login and a page opens allowing you to renew items, manage your holds, change your PIN, and check to see if you have fines.

How do I renew my library materials online?

To renew a library item:

  1. Log in to your user account, locate Login in the library catalog. You will need your library card number and four digit PIN. Your PIN is usually the last four digits of the phone number you have registered with the library. 
  2. Click My Account. When the new window loads, click the Checkouts tab. A list of items you currently have checked out will be displayed.
  3. Select one of these options:
    • To renew all the items in the list, mark the Select All box.
    • Mark the box next to the title(s) you want to renew.
    • Click the blue Renew button.
  4. The item will be renewed and a new due date for the item will appear to the right of the title. Please note:  If the renewal limit has already been reached, it will be indicated in red.
  5. When you are finished, log out of your user account.
